Meet Joe
Born and raised in a small town just south of Cedar Rapids, Joe Mitchell has spent his entire life in Iowa. His parents are self made, small business owners and taught him the value of hard work, strong families, and looking out for your neighbors. These values continue with him today.
As a developer focused on workforce housing, Joe provides working-class Iowans critical access to housing through his projects throughout rural Iowa. He has seen firsthand how housing shortages and rising costs impact families and local communities. His developments in Dyersville, Grinnell, Mount Pleasant, and Clear Lake have made housing more accessible and home ownership more attainable for Iowa families.
Joe’s private sector experience is coupled with experience in public service, including as a Regional Director at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during the Trump Administration and later as Chief of Staff at the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). His experience has reinforced a simple belief: government should focus on real solutions that help families and communities flourish.
After running for office at just 20 years old and being sworn into the Iowa House of Representatives at age 21, Joe became the youngest state legislator in Iowa history. During his time in the legislature, Joe put Iowans first by lowering taxes, cutting red tape, and fighting for families, farmers, and small businesses.
Now running for Congress, Joe is concerned about the rising cost of living and the growing challenges facing working families. Too many young people are unable to buy a home, unlikely to start a family, or even put down roots in the communities where they grew up. Joe believes Iowa should be a place where the next generation can afford to stay, build a career, and achieve the American Dream.
He supports term limits for members of Congress, banning congressional stock trading, and refuses to accept corporate PAC money because elected officials should answer to voters—not special interests. He is willing to challenge the status quo because he’s not a career politician and doesn’t seek the approval of the political establishment.
Joe is committed to tackling the issues that matter most to Iowans: lowering costs, expanding homeownership, supporting small businesses, strengthening rural communities, and restoring trust in government. He believes the American Dream can once again be attainable to the next generation, but only if we make serious changes.
